Concluding the National Maritime Week with a blast, the industry has celebrated the 24th National Seafarers’ Day, in accordance with Proclamation No. 1094 that declared every last Sunday of September to be the National Seafarers’ Day.
The observance of National Seafarers’ Day underscores the role of Filipino mariners in economic development. The celebration started through a traditional Grand Parade participated by various maritime schools in Manila.
This year, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) hosted the Memorial Sea: Rite of Remembrance – ecumenical service for deceased seafarers, to recognize them as seafarers who risked their lives on the high seas.
After the Grand Parade, Manila Archbishop Father Luis Antonio Tagle celebrated the Holy Eucharist at the Paco Arena. The NSD Committee and Western Union also announced the Ten Most Outstanding Maritime Students, as well as winners of contests held throughout the week.
This year’s host, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) passed the torch to the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), the host for National Maritime Week next year.
