Many obstacles continue to saddle the country’s maritime industry, preventing it from going full speed ahead.

Notwithstanding these lingering barriers, including obsolete laws or the absence of updated regulations, the industry has been performing strongly in recent years.

The robust state of the industry was reported by Engr. Ramon Hernandez, Director of the Shipyard Regulation Service (SRS) of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) during the technical conference on the second day of PHILMARINE 2019.

World’s 25th busiest port

He started off with the continued growth of deployment of seafarers overseas, from 442,800 in 2016 generating $5.60 billion in remittances in 2016, to 464,400 remitting a total of $5.87 billion in 2017.

In ports, Engr. Hernandez said that based on statistics from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), there were 454,340 domestic ship calls and 11,312 foreign ship calls in the country in 2018, pushing Philippine ports among the top 25 busiest ports in the world.

Specifically on cargo, total domestic and foreign cargo throughout were up from 102.5 metric tons and 151.5 mt in 2017, or an increase of 38% and 46%, respectively. Still citing data from PPA, the country has accumulated transport services worth $2.28 billion and $4.80 billion in exports and imports, respectively in 2017.

On the shipbuilding and ship repair (SBSR) industry, Engr. Hernandez reported that Philippine shipyards, local and foreign-owned combined, built a total of 1,179 ships in 2018 with total gross tonnage of close to 453,000 tons.
